Summer Camp Counselor: Kummer Center for STEM Education

Summer Camp Counselor
 
Kummer Center for STEM Education is looking for several Summer Camp Counselors to assist with summer camp operations.
 
Location: 300 W. 12th St., 215 Centennial Hall, Rolla, MO 65409. Note: online applications accepted only.
 
Schedule: Part-Time and Full-Time, varying shifts
 
Salary:
$14 per hour for part-time
 
Summary:  Camp counselors will assist in implementing activities designed to fuel camper interest in STEAM career paths. Counselors will be role models and mentors for campers; they will assist camp directors/coordinators and work with individual or small groups of campers when needed.
 
Counselors should: 
‒        Be enthusiastic students who can effectively communicate and maintain a high level of energy while supervising and interacting with participants of summer camps
‒        Be ambassadors for Missouri S&T in building positive experiences for campers, ages 10-18, and their families
‒        Serve as one of the primary adults responsible for the safety and enjoyment of campers attending Missouri S&T summer camps
‒        Assist camp directors/coordinators in implementing, planning, coordinating, and carrying out activities related to summer programming
‒        Serve as a mentor and role-model to campers and fulfill the role of representative of Missouri S&T
‒        Communicate effectively and appropriately with the campus community.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties include, but are not limited to:
‒        Assist in the direction, supervision, and organization of campers while in university housing, while transporting to and from activities, while in activities, and throughout the camp
‒        Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth
‒        Assure campers are properly supervised at all times
‒       Be aware of, follow and uphold all safety and security rules and procedures
‒        Engage campers in activities following designated schedule
‒        Ability to quickly pivot to alternate activities if needed
‒        Be aware of privacy requirements and appropriate interaction with students under the age of 18
‒        Actively participate in all program areas as assigned including but not limited to assisting or leading in team builders, icebreakers, group challenges, workshops, etc.
‒        Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff
‒        Daily direction for self-care of each camper and recognize personal health needs
‒        Be alert to campers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems and discuss concerns with camp director/coordinator when needed
‒        Be alert to equipment and facilities to ensure utilization, proper care, and maintenance is adhered to, report repairs needed promptly to director/coordinator
‒        Be a role model to campers and staff in attitude and behavior
‒        Set a good example to campers and others in regard to general camp procedures and practices including sanitation, schedule, sportsmanship, and respect for differences
‒        Participate fully in all camp activities, including planning and leading those as assigned.
‒        Maintain professionalism in all communication and interactions with campers, their families and S&T staff
‒        Observe campers’ behavior, assess its appropriateness, and apply applicable behavior-management techniques if needed
‒        Escort campers to all activities and workshops and help with clean-up
‒        Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment, and facilities.
‒        Prepare for and actively participate in pre-camp training and weekly meetings.
‒        Assist camp directors/coordinators in loading and moving camp supplies for on-campus activities
‒        Cooperate with the summer programs team in working together for the welfare of the campers, and campus community
‒        Inform the camp director/coordinator immediately for any personal, medical, or social concerns of the campers and/or staff
 
Minimum Qualifications:
●       Must be a current Missouri S&T student in good standing & enrolled in the Summer 2022 or Fall 2022 semester
●       Must have completed a minimum of one (1) year as a student at a university or college
●       Must be a minimum of 20 years old
●       Must be able to become certified in CPR (training will be provided)
●       Must be available for Summer Camp Counselor Training
●       Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner
 
Preferred Qualifications:
●       Experience with teaching or tutoring youth
●       Understand the development needs of youth
●       Demonstrate ability to practice flexibility, frequent and last-minute changes, and patience
●       Ability to communicate and work with groups and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff
●       Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to camp activities
●       Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision.
●       Some physical requirements of a Summer Camp Counselor position could be endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, walking long distances, climbing stairs, requires hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment and camp activities; requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs and the ability to lift 50 lbs; willing to work irregular hours and with daily exposure to the sun and heat.
